A cataract is a clouding of your eye's lens, the part of the eye that focuses light on the retina. The lens is made primarily of protein and water. As you age, the protein tends to mass together, causing cloudiness in your vision. Cataracts may also develop as the lens discolors over time, giving your vision a brownish tint.
While mild cases of cataracts can be treated simply by changing the prescription of glasses or contacts, more advanced cataracts often require surgical treatment. Cataracts can be corrected by surgically removing the affected lens and replacing it with an artificial one.
